China's agricultural production levels meet and often exceed its demand for food. But the country now faces complex nutrition and food issues that are at the core of its economic and social development. At the same time, overweight and obesity rates are rapidly increasing among urban populations. These conditions threaten China with a new, massive increase in chronic diseases and the social and economic costs associated them.
