Films with a Message - The UN supports Youth Red Ribbon Initiative in AIDS Prevention among Migrant
"I have not seen a film for years! Today I not only got to see a film but also learned how to prevent AIDS!" said a young construction worker from Hebei Province. On the evening on 8 August 2006, the Youth Red Ribbon Initiative was launched in Beijing. Dr. Christian Voumard, UNICEF Representative for China, attended the event on behalf of the United Nations Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. In a festive atmosphere, a "filming van" was unveiled by Mr. Lu Yongzheng, Secretary General of Chinese Youth League and Dr. Wang Longde, Vice Minister of Health. Over six hundred construction workers, mostly young and coming from rural areas, watched a film that was newly released in 2006.
"I heard that the character 'gong' standing for workers remind us that Chinese workers are holding up the sky and standing firm on earth. In addition to creating the beautiful world around us, the migrant community can contribute to building a healthy China," said Dr. Voumard, followed by a round of applause. He went on by saying that the UN will be committed to support such initiatives as HIV/AIDS prevention among young people, in collaboration with the Youth League and other partners.
The Youth League Youth Red Ribbon Initiative in sending HIV/AIDS prevention message through films at c0nstruction sites will be brought to millions of construction workers in 5 provinces. HIV/AIDS prevention films will be shown before a feature film, together with other educational materials.
