Ms Veneman visited Yanchi county

On the second full day of Ms. Veneman's field trip to Ningxia province, the UNICEF Executive Director drive two hours out of  Yanchuan  to Yanchi county to look at how UNICEF was helping reduce maternal and neo-natal mortality in poor rural areas. Yanchi county is a poor mountainous area of eight townships and 100 villages, with per capita income of around US$ 200, compared with a national figure of US$ 1,150.

As a result of the UNICEF-supported Safe Motherhood Initiative, hospital deliveries in Yanchi county have increased from 67% in 2001 to nearly 90% in 2004. Although both maternal and child mortality rates have continued to decline,  the challenge remains of  encouraging poor women from the mountainous areas to come to receive  pre- and  post-natal care and treatment  and have their deliveries at township and village clinics.

The local authorities provide a subsidy to poor families opting for hospital delivery, while UNICEF supports the training of health staff to upgrade service quality and provides pregnant women with the information they need to make the best decisions for their child.

One particularly spectacular success in Yanchi county has been increasing the iodized salt consumption from 27% to 90% in 2004 through a combination of social mobilization and legislation against the sale of non-iodized salt for domestic consumption.  After conducting an interview in Da-Ba village with the accompanying Reuters-Beijing TV crew, Ms Veneman drove straight to Yanchuan Airport for her return flight to Beijing.
