UNICEF's global partnership with FIFA and national partnership with the China Football Association were used to negotiate UNICEF and children orphaned by AIDS as the theme of the 2004 Asian Football Cup. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Sir Roger Moore and fellow actor and national AIDS Ambassador helped raise USD $100,000 from a fundraising evening also celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Asian Football Confederation. A linked press conference achieved extensive national and international media coverage for the situation of children orphaned by AIDS.

Sir Roger Moore accepted a cheque from the President of Asian Football Confederation Mr. Mohamed Bin Hammam for USD100,000 which was then handed through the UNICEF Representative Dr Christian Voumard to the Deputy Director General of Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs of Ministry of Commerce Mr. Zhu Hong. The funding is to support an existing UNICEF-assisted programme providing direct assistance to children orphaned by AIDS.
