China Earthquake One Year Anniversary Special 2009

One year ago, on 12 May 2008, a massive earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan Province's Wenchuan County. The earthquake left 88,000 people dead or missing and nearly 400,000 injured. The first government tally shows that 5,335 children were killed or remain missing and another 546 were left disabled.

It also damaged or destroyed millions of homes, leaving five million people homeless. The earthquake caused extensive damage to basic infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, roads, and water systems. This is the worst earthquake to hit China in more than 30 years.

Nearly one year on from the devastating disaster, extensive assistance from UNICEF is reaching some of the most vulnerable children and women in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. Up to now, UNICEF has provided US$20 million dollars for earthquake relief and recovery, assisting the Government of China in education, health, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, psychosocial support, child protection, HIV/AIDS and social policies for children.

At the one year anniversary, there is still so much left to be done, as survivors of the earthquake rebuild their lives and communities. UNICEF will continue to support  the full recovery of children and their families in the earthquake zone in the coming years.
