The issue of drinking water contaminated with bacteria has now received due recognition by the government, which has responded by critically reviewing its drinking water policy.

Community-based drinking water projects have moved from the pilot phase to being fully integrated into the Ministry of Water manual of field operations.

Owing in part to UNICEF advocacy and screening of wells, China has invested more than US $100 million in arsenic mitigation efforts since 2001.

Arsenic content is now one of the indicators measured during regular government monitoring of water quality. Including arsenic content as an indicator provides sufficient time for corrective action.
