Children and AIDS Campaign at a Glance

Globally, significant progress is being made in charting the past and future course of the pandemic, in providing free antiretroviral treatment to those who need it, and in expanding the coverage of prevention services.

Yet every minute of every day,

  • There are nearly 1,800 new HIV infections in children under 15, mostly from mother-to-child transmission;
  • 1,400 children under 15 die of AIDS-related illness;
  • More than 6,000 young people aged 15–24 are newly infected with HIV;
  • Millions of children, adolescents and young people in the path of the pandemic are at risk and in need of protection.

After more than 20 years,

  • Less than 10 per cent of pregnant women are being offered services to prevent transmission of HIV to their infants;
  • Less than 10 per cent of the children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS receive public support or services;

In late 2005, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan, launched the Unite for Children Unite against AIDS Global Campaign with UNICEF, UNAIDS and other UN organizations, committing to dramatically accelerate and scale up action for children and young people, by providing a platform for everyone involved in halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among children, adolescents and young people.

The Campaign in China

In response to the call of the United Nations and to put children and young people at front and center of the national AIDS agenda, the State Council AIDS Working Committee Office (SCAWCO) launched the Campaign on Children and AIDS in China, forming a broad alliance for and with children and young people in the fight against AIDS.

The Campaign in China will focus on five priority areas:

  • Pediatric care
  • PMTCT
  • Orphans & Affected
  • Prevention among Young People
  • Stigma and Discrimination
