A former child soldier, Kandahar.
Some of the most vulnerable victims of the war are the children who have fled from it, either with their parents or on their own. Tides of destitute children from rural areas have spilled over into cities. The Aschiana Project teaches some of these children useful skills to prevent them from going out onto the streets to earn their living by begging, selling or foraging for scraps of plastic and waste paper. Other vulnerable children include girls put in prison for running away from early marriage or other ‘bad behaviour’ that would not be criminalized in most other countries.
