UNICEF and partners

UNICEF and its partners are implementing projects based on the UN joint programme developed since 2005 in consultation with the Government of Afghanistan and UN country team assessments. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Afghanistan National Development Strategy form the basis of these efforts.

The major joint programmes include:

Healthy School Initiative (MDG2: Universal Primary Education) led by the Ministry of Education with the participation of UNICEF, WHO, WFP and UNESCO.

Afghanistan Integrated Functional Literacy Initiative (MDG3: Gender Equality and Empowerment) with the same partners as the Healthy School Initiative plus UNIFEM.

Maternal Mortality Reduction (MDG5: Maternal Mortality) led by the Ministry of Health with the participation of UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA and UNIFEM.

National Youth Joint Programme (MDG3, 4, 5 & 6) led by the Ministry of Information and Culture with the participation of UNICEF, UNDP, UN Habitat, UNESCO, UN-HABITAT and UNFPA.

GAIN (MDG7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability) led by the Ministry of Agriculture with the participation of WFP, UNICEF, UNDP, FAO and UNOPS.
