“All children deserve to grow up in a family”

By Tatiana Tibuleac, UNICEF Moldova

CHISINAU, Moldova, 31 May 2007 - At the age of 14 Adriana Solovei is already quite a personality in her community. She is thought of as a child only by her parents. Almost everyone else who knows her considers her to be like an adult from many points of view.

In school, at home or with her friends Adriana is always taking on responsibility and trying to understand everything. However, this doesn’t make her boring or uninteresting to her close friends, quite the contrary – she is an example to follow. Adriana’s departure tomorrow to the Junior 8 Summit in Germany has not surprised anyone except maybe herself.

Armed with ideas and courage, and now delegated to represent Moldova, she is making her plans to change the world.

“I will try to bring to the Junior 8 Summit some of Moldova’s most urgent problems: poverty and a high level of migration by the population in search of a better job abroad. I’ll talk about the children in my country who are left behind without parental care, support or education which is so important for their future. I have friends and colleagues who are living with their relatives and who really need their parents next to them. Also, many families are destroyed because of the permanent migration of mothers and fathers who do not return. All children deserve to grow up in a family. I hope we will find solutions at the summit and after my return I will do as much as possible to improve the situation,” says Adriana as she prepares her speech for the Summit.

Adriana says that she has been a dynamic person ever since she was born; and now that she is older she wishes the day was longer so that she could manage to accomplish all her plans and goals. Her agenda already looks like that of a leader. She goes to school each the morning, but her day really begins only after classes.

First, she goes to the Youth Radio Studio where together with other children she prepares radio programmes and broadcasts. Afterwards she visits the “Speranta” Centre for children with disabilities. Here Adriana made a close friend called Lenuta.

Adriana says that when she will go to Germany she will encourage all children from there to take part in volunteer projects.

“At the forthcoming Summit I would like to discuss the participation of teenagers and young people in different activities including: volunteering at organizations for children with disabilities or living with HIV; organizing and participating in seminars on democracy, society, mass-media, and school. I think in this way young people would be much more interested in how to help the country and the society, and so wouldn’t smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs. This is an advantage for all of us: the children, youth, adults and old people, for the entire society,” says Adriana.

Being a person with a natural ability to take everything in her stride and who is always willing to help anyone in need, Adriana is considered a ground-breaker and inspiration by the people around her.

People know she is the best person to go to with questions about projects for young people and she initiates all kinds of campaigns.

Although she does not yet know what profession she is going to choose when she grows up, Adriana is sure of one thing – she wants to serve people at all times.

We wish her the best of luck in Germany!
