UNICEF Albania Calendar 2007
Young People are playing a positive role in helping to build a new modern society in Albania Tirana, December 2006 - The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) guarantees the right of children and young people to be heard and to provide input into decisions that affect them. Today as we celebrate the 60th anniversary, UNICEF is having young people who designed the 2007 UNICEF Albania Calendar, “Look Me in the Eye”, as a tool to express their views and thoughts on issues that are of concern to them. From its inception, UNICEF has worked to promote and protect the rights of children in situations of conflict, reconstruction, transition and development. In 1989, this commitment was articulated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world - ratified by all but two countries. We are guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and we are committed to the principle that child rights apply to all children, everywhere. UNICEF was established in Albania in 1992 following the collapse of the Communist government. It has been active in the country for 14 years, during difficult times; assisting in efforts to protect and promote children’s rights, to ensure that children’s basic needs are met and opportunities to reach their full potential are provided. UNICEF continues to be an important partner to the Government of Albania in their efforts to ensure that children and young people, in particular those who live in poverty and exclusion, enjoy and exercise their rights. UNICEF supports the reform processes being undertaken by the Government of Albania and assists in efforts to combat poverty, harmonize legislation with EU and international standards, achieve the Millennium Development Goals and implement the National Plan of Action for Children. UNICEF and the cause of children have many friends, a wide range of supporters such us government, civil society, donors, artists and others who have been great advocates for children’s rights. "If this group of 12 young people is an example of the caliber of youths in Albania, then the Government would secure the future of the country by arming itself with the potential of this generation through strategic investments. Their messages tells us that they have dreams and hopes for their own future as well as of the future of Albania", says Carrie Auer,UNICEF representative in Albania. For more information: Anila Miria
