We need 12 hugs a day to grow up - Hug Day 2009 in Bulgaria
13 September 2009, SOFIA – Hundreds of children and their parents gathered this Sunday in Borissova Garden to participate in UNICEF “Big hug” event. “It is said that we need 4 hugs a day to survive. We need 8 hugs daily to stay fit and we need 12 hugs a day to grow up.” – said Ms. Diana Vakarelska, UNICEF Bulgaria. The event was hosted by the Bulgarian R’n’B duo Rumanetsa and Enchev. The designer Virginia Zdravkova and the actor Stefan Vuldobrev attended the event as parents and supporters of the UNICEF’s campaign. The show programme presented a theatre for children, music and dance performances. There was a high-speed competition for crawling babies “Who is the first to hug mom?” The fastest children were awarded with cups and presents by UNICEF. The parents participated actively in a funny quiz on good parenting in early childhood. Two fluffy mascots with “Hug me!” entertained the audience. About the campaign “The silence today bears the cries of tomorrow” UNICEF’s communication campaign for early child development “The silence today bears the cries of tomorrow” covers the period from June to October 2009. The campaign aims to raise awareness of Bulgarian parents, the public, media and politicians, of the importance of the first 3 years in children’s development as well as to stimulate meaningful communication with children in this period. The main message of the “The silence today bears the cries of tomorrow” campaign is that every day is important and valuable. Communication with the child during the first three years builds his/her attitudes towards world. Whether the child will respond with “I hate you” or “I love you” in the future, depends on our overall relationship with the child during his/her early years. Early child development is embedded in the key priorities and actions of the National Strategy for the child 2008-2018, adopted by resolution of the National Assembly of Bulgaria. In a partnership with the government and the local authorities, UNICEF will work for the creation of integrated policies and models, supported with budgets, which guarantee the best start in life for every child in Bulgaria.
