Gheorghe Hagi appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Romania
Bucharest, September 29, 2008
UNICEF Romania today announced the appointment of Mr. Gheorghe Hagi, renowned former football player, as National Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Romania. In addition to the remarkable achievements of his sporting career, Mr. Hagi over the years initiated and engaged in projects supporting children in difficulty.
In becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Gheorghe Hagi joins a large number of respected celebrities – sportspeople, musicians and actors – who voluntarily support the activities of UNICEF at national, regional and global level. In his new capacity, he will support UNICEF Romania in its work to promote and advocate for children’s rights and to put vulnerable children in the spotlight. Mr. Hagi will also support UNICEF in its fundraising activities.
“Gheorghe Hagi has been a globally recognized personality for a long time. He is a renowned sportsman and at the same time an extremely modest and humble person. It was an honour for me to get to know him and to learn of his involvement in quietly helping large numbers of children in difficulty. I strongly believe that he will be a great supporter and ambassador for UNICEF in promoting the rights of children”, declared Edmond McLoughney, UNICEF Representative in Romania.
“It is an honour for me to receive this title from UNICEF. I know from my experience how important it is to help the children. I was helped to fulfil my dream by people with big hearts who believed in me. Now it is my turn to give back as much as possible from what I have achieved and, together with UNICEF, to give hope to the Romanian children. We must understand that by helping today’s children we actually help tomorrow’s adults. A child’s smile is more important than all the treasures in the world! This is why I am today near UNICEF”, declared Gheorghe Hagi.
In Romania, UNICEF has collaborated over the years with celebrities from the world of sports, music, theatre and television. In 2006, Mrs. Andreea Marin Bănică was appointed National Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Romania to support the fundraising initiatives of the organisation.
UNICEF was the first organisation to draw celebrities to its side. Danny Kaye was the first Goodwill Ambassador in 1954; the title was then given to Audrey Hepburn and to many other personalities. The list of ambassadors now includes over 260 celebrities. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors are well-known personalities willing to do their utmost to mobilize support for children among the general public and within their industry. These volunteers have a unique ability to touch people’s hearts with their passion and commitment.
