Official Statement by Octavian Bivol, UNICEF Representative in Bugaria
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of UNICEF, first of all I would like to invite you and urge you to join us in the charity auction in support of the “School free of violence” project, a project which brings Bulgarian society a step forward in its efforts to prevent violence among children.
I would like to highlight the fact that our children are not our future, they are our present. They have the right to grow up in a peaceful and supporting community which makes them feel protected. Each and every act of violence – from the “innocent” mocking to the aggressive physical attack – affects permanently the child’s psyche of both the victim and the aggressor, as well as the one witnessing such behavior. It is high time we did something about that!
I believe that the school system is where we, the responsible citizens, should launch an active initiative against violence and aggression against and among our children. In schools we can unite the efforts of children, parents, and teachers and provide our sons and daughters with communication skills and ways of handling conflicts, which will be priceless to them in their entire life. Through the project “School free of violence”, we aim at establishing the school system as a synonym for a peaceful and supporting environment, where common values and norms of behavior are being respected and applied by children, their parents, teachers and school board.
Let us all stand together behind the idea that our children should study in environment, characterized by mutual respect, peaceful dialogue and goodwill. During the most important period of their personal development, we should advocate for their right to feel secure and be protected. Let us initiate the active efforts opposing the violence against the children of Bulgaria.
I thank you cordially!
