UNICEF Regional Director visits AzerbaijanThree-day trip to focus on results for children BAKU, March 9, 2007 – Results for children in the areas of health, education and protection will be the subjects of a visit by Ms. Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS). The three-day visit starts on 11th March. During her trip, Ms. Calivis is expected to meet senior Government officials – including the Deputy Prime Minister, the Ministers of Health, Social Protection, Education, Youth and Sports, Economic Development - the President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the First Lady Ms. Mehriban Aliyeva, the Chairman of the Parliament and Chairmen of the Social Policy, Human Rights and International Relations commissions of the Parliament and representatives of the international development community and the United Nations. During her meetings, Ms. Calivis will discuss broader child protection issues and the need to focus on achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The Regional Director will also visit the Internal Displaced Persons’ (IDP) settlement in Darnagul District of Baku to see the situation of children living there. Ms. Maria Calivis, an Italian national, became Regional Director for UNICEF CEE/CIS in February 2004.
