As we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of UNICEF in Tajikistan, here are the highlights from the last two decades, the milestones of our work for the children of Tajikistan.



A chance for children in conflict with the law
At the time of independence, in 1991, no system of child sensitive justice was in place in Kazakhstan. UNICEF supported situation analysis on juvenile justice in 2000 and a ‘Juvenile Justice System Development Concept’ was adopted in the country in 2008.

Supporting juvenile justice in Albania
In late 1990s, Albania’s pre-trial centres and prisons were notorious for mistreating children and ignoring their status as minors. To protect the rights of children, UNICEF has assisted in developing a comprehensive juvenile justice system in Albania.



Across Ukraine, young people continue to be detained in closed institutions such as at Berezhany juvenile detention facility in the west of the country. There are currently about 180 boys serving sentences here.
