Floods in Serbia disrupt school year: How UNICEF is helping

OBRENOVAC, Serbia, 14 July 2014 - Most pupils from the Serbian municipality of Obrenovac did not finish this school year in their own schools.  The floodwaters damaged many schools and homes making it impossible from them to attend classes and take their exams.

Fifteen-year old Dragan is one of those who cannot return to his home as the floods have heavily damaged his home. Dragan studied for the most important school exam in Serbia, which pupils take at the end of primary school and which determines which high school they will attend, without electricity and often in impossible conditions.

To ensure a normal start of 2014/2015 school year, UNICEF will provide assistance to schools and kindergartens in equipment, supplies and textbooks in order to support their return back-to-school.
