UNICEF launches the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Braille for TajikistanDUSHANBE, Tajikistan, 15 October 2012 - In the run-up to the Universal Children’s Day on November 20th – the day when the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and 3rd December, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, UNICEF in partnership with the Civil Society Organization of Blind People of Tajikistan launched the first ever Tajik translation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Booklet “It is about ability” – a child friendly explanation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) printed in Braille.
The event brought together the key ministries, government establishments, local authorities, civil society organizations, development agencies and mass media in Tajikistan to discuss issues related to children with disabilities, especially those with visual impairments and identify opportunities for them to take an active part in society. Around the launching event, staff from special schools for blind children and other relevant institutions received training on both the CRC and the CRPD and their application in their practical work. The two publications printed in Braille in Tajik will contribute to promoting the rights of children with visual impairments throughout the country. “Being disabled does not mean we cannot do things on our own; we are as much Tajik citizens as any other citizen and we need equal opportunities! Now, we will give an opportunity to our children to get acquainted with both the CRC and the CRPD and learn to know more about their rights,” says Tengniev Kholmahmad, Chairperson of Civil Society Organization of Blind People of Tajikistan.
The event also invites opinion-leaders to become actively engaged in transforming their communities to support all children to develop to their full potential. It recalls that opportunities provided to children and young people with disabilities can contribute to develop their abilities. “Children with disabilities have the same rights as others. Ensuring the full enjoyment of their rights on an equal basis with other children is the responsibility not only of the government, but of every member of society,” said UNICEF Representative Laylee Moshiri.
