Evaluation of the quality of medical services for pregnant women and newborns
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, 30 March 2012 - With the support of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic is presenting the results of a two-week national-level evaluation of the quality of hospital and out-patient observation and care in pregnancy and the postnatal period.
This is first time such an evaluation has been carried out in Kyrgyzstan. It provides in-depth analysis of the quality of services, and also reveals the overall situation in this field in the country. A roundtable meeting will be held with participants including Kasymbek Mambetov, Deputy Minister of Health, Kamchybek Uzakbaev, Director of the National Centre for Mother and Child Welfare, Ashirali Zurdinov, Rector of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, the healthcare coordinators for all provinces and other interested parties.
The results of the evaluation are also important for all donor organisations working in the field of child and maternal health. Jonathan Veitch, UNICEF Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic, notes that the evaluation will support the appliance of WHO guiding principles and international standards in clinical practice at maternity facilities, and help improve the quality and focus of donor assistance.
This evaluation used WHO’s assessment tool. The working group for the evaluation was made up of 20 participants, including international experts and representatives of the national healthcare system at central and local levels who had been trained on the use of the evaluation methodology and tools.
This event is part of the joint UN (WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA) Project “Ensuring access to affordable health services in the affected areas of the country for women of reproductive age and newborns” implemented since 2010 in Batken and Osh Provinces. It also contributes to the UNICEF maternal and child health programme which is one of the key components of the new programme of cooperation between UNICEF and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2012-16. Its main purposes are to provide equal access for women and children to quality healthcare services, irrespective of their social status.
