Nana Mouskouri to join UNICEF Romania once again

BUCHAREST, Romania, 29 November 2011 – The renowned singer, Nana Mouskouri, one of the world’s golden singing voices, returns to Romania for an extraordinary concert and to support UNICEF.

During her stay in Romania from 1 - 4 December, Ms. Mouskouri – International Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF – will pay a visit to St. Pantelimon Maternity in Bucharest to draw public attention to baby-friendly hospitals as centres of breastfeeding promotion and best practices.

Three years ago, the artist took part in a telethon organised by UNICEF and the national broadcasting station, TVR, to raise funds for Romanian maternities. The money raised with support from individuals and generous members of private sector has been used by UNICEF Romania to support the certification of 31 Baby-Friendly Hospitals.

Ms. Mouskouri will perform on 4 December at Bucharest’s Sala Palatului in a concert organised by Project Events.

In her capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, the singer will participate in a private fundraiser at Artmark organised by the Greek business community in Romania at the initiative of Mrs. Chatherine Sofianou of SofMedica and under the patronage of the Greek Embassy in Bucharest.

With her ability to speak and sing in English, French, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish, Nana Mouskouri is the ideal spokesperson for UNICEF and she has taken every opportunity to promote children’s rights both during her visits to UNICEF-assisted sites and during her concerts. As a Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Mouskouri has relentlessly promoted UNICEF’s fundraising and awareness-raising efforts. In her interviews and concerts, Nana Mouskouri has never hesitated to ask for support for child-centred programmes. She has made generous financial contributions for project development in Guatemala, Kenya, Uganda, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Russia and Romania.

One of her recent actions for UNICEF is a message recorded for the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Goodwill Ambassador tries to make the whole world aware of the fact that children are the ones who need support and assistance the most and that it lies in our power to take action in order to make sure that every child can see his or her dreams come true.

Nana Mouskouri was born and raised in Greece and she studied piano and voice at the Athens Conservatory. She made her debut at a tavern in Plaka. Shortly after her debut, she won first prize in a Greek festival, the first of numerous awards received during her career.

She is the best-selling female artist of all time, with more than 300 gold and platinum records. She has performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Olympia in Paris and New York’s Carnegie Hall.

About Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in Romania
The Initiative was launched in 1991 by WHO and UNICEF as an effort to turn all maternities into centres that support and promote breastfeeding. Breastfeeding brings unique benefits to children that cannot be reproduced by any other type of nutrition. The benefits of mother’s milk are noticeable immediately after birth and they last a lifetime. A breastfed child is healthier and enjoys a better physical, psychological and intellectual development. The mother and baby bonding created during breastfeeding is extremely strong. Moreover, one of the best results of breastfeeding promotion is a decrease in the number of children abandoned in maternities.

About UNICEF
UNICEF is on the ground in Romania and over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence.  In Romania, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, quality education, and the protection of children from violence, neglect, and HIV/AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.
