UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebo is visiting Ukraine to fundraise for children6 September 2009, Kyiv- Today Goodwill Ambassador Sissel Kyrkjebo comes to Ukraine. Together with the Norwegian TV Show Gala she will film the most emerging needs of Ukrainian children. In cooperation with the National committee for UNICEF, she wants to raise funds to support the work against HIV/AIDS, to support family type care for abandoned children and advocate for their rights.
The classical Norwegian singer Sissel Kjyrkjebo was appointed as national UNICEF ambassador in 2005. Focus of her work is helping children who are affected by HIV/AIDS. “25 years after the HIV/AIDS pandemic started the world has yet to open its eyes to realize that the children are hit the hardest. They loose their parents, get infected themselves, miss out on education and health care – and are vulnerable for abuse and exploitation.” – says Ms. Kyrkjebo. “Ukraine is the country worst affected by HIV/AIDS in Europe and we are here to support UNICEF in their work for changing the situation.”- emphasises UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador during her visit to Ukraine. In 2008-2010 UNICEF Norway has been supporting programmes in Ukraine with the TV Gala funds in amount over USD 800, 000. This funding supports the key activities under the HIV Prevention project of the HIV/AIDS, Children and Youth Programme and contributes to development of the HIV prevention services and education programmes in Ukraine. It helps to equip adolescents and young people visiting the Youth Friendly Clinics and those studying in schools with the knowledge and skills that will help to protect them from HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and substance abuse.
