Mark Hereward - New UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan
BAKU, August 5, 2009 – Mr. Mark Hereward has been appointed new Representative for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Azerbaijan.
Mr. Hereward takes up his post this month over from Mr. Mohamed Alami, interim UNICEF Representative to Azerbaijan.
Hereward said he welcomes the new assignment. "I am very excited to be here, in a country where so much has been achieved, and where there is great potential to do even more," he said.
Prior to his current posting, Mr. Hereward has been serving as Senior Adviser, UN Coherence in the Division of Governance and Multilateral Affairs, New York Headquarters. In this capacity, he has provided strategic direction to the organization at the global and country level on means to enhance development cooperation through improved coherence, efficiency and effectiveness of the UN system.
From June 2004 to December 2007, Mr. Hereward served as Deputy Director, a.i. and Senior Programme Officer in the Regional and Inter-Agency Affairs Section, and Senior Programme Officer, Inter-Agency Collaboration, Office of the Executive Director, New York Headquarters, where he worked on UN reform and coherence matters and developing the inter-agency UNICEF policy.
Mr. Hereward joined UNICEF in April 1995 as Project Officer, Statistics and Monitoring, in the Strategic Information Section,New York Headquarters. From November 2001 to June 2004, Mr. Hereward served as Regional Planning Officer in Bangkok, Thailand, where he led the strategic planning process for the ESARO region and oversaw the support country programme processes. From August 1998to October 2001, he served as Planning Officer in Beijing, China, responsible for the planning, monitoring and evaluation of the UNICEF Country Programme.
Prior to joining UNICEF, Mr. Hereward worked as Field Based Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and as a Consultant for the Rockefeller Foundation, USA, from September 1991 to March 1995.
Mr. Hereward also served as Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Carolina Population Centre, USA where he conducted research on population issues in China. Mr. Hereward is a national of the United Kingdom. In July 1986, he obtained a Master's degree in Medical Demography from the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, UK. In 1987, he earned from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, a Master's Degree in Demography, followed, in 1990, by his Ph.D in Demography.
