UNICEF Serbia Awards Media Prize for quality and ethical reporting on children and child rights
BELGRADE, Serbia - November 20, 2008 For the fifth time on Universal Children’s Day, UNICEF Serbia Office today awarded journalists for high quality and ethical reporting on children and children's rights. This year, mobile communications service company "Telenor" joined the even as a partner who provided specia prizes. The winners in the competition of 40 texts, radio and TV entries submitted by 30 authors are Ms. Mirjana Jakab for the article “A Disabled Child Too Is An Incest Victim” published in the Gradjanski List newspaper, and Ms. Jelena Marinkovic for the TV story “White-painted walls” in the production of TV Pirot. The Jury consisting of Dr Snjezana Milivojevic (Professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences), Mr. Dragan Janjic (Assistant Minister of Culture of the Republic of Serbia), Mr. Djordje Vlajic (BBC journalist), Mr. Ljubomir Pejakovic (Advisor to the Minister of Labour and Social Policy of the Republic of Serbia) and Ms. Jadranka Milanovic, UNICEF Serbia Communication Officer, reviewed the media entries based on the criteria related to the promotion of child rights and general criteria of professional reporting, including the quality and ethics in reporting and public benefit, and also whether the material could be considered as an initiator of positive changes in society and changes of social norms.
The UNICEF Serbia Media prize was established in 2004, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The prize recognises the efforts of electronic and print media in pursuing better news coverage of children's issues. The underlying principle of the award is that enhanced awareness of the practices already operating and those in the launching stage will help to make practical, tangible progress for children in Serbia.
