With Ms Calivis and Mr. Alomar are Ms. Shahnaz Kianian-Firouzgar, UNICEF CEECIS Deputy Director, Mr Thierry Poirel, CEB Director General and Mr. Luca Schio, in charge of Institutional Relations at the CEB.

Ms. Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for CEE/CIS, today met with Mr. Raphael Alomar, the Governor of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), to discuss the on going collaborations between the Bank and UNICEF.

The CEB and UNICEF cooperation is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2006 covering 11 countries in South Eastern Europe in the fields of health, early childhood development and education, HIV/AIDS and prevention of violence, exploitation and abuse. Joint projects to improve access to education and to assist families at risk of abandoning their children have been supported respectively in The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Moldova. Negotiations are near conclusion for two further projects to improve survival of pre-mature newborns and to improve access to education in Moldova and Georgia respectively.

The CEB is a multilateral development bank with 40 member states. It has a focus to contribute to strengthening social cohesion in Europe. Since its inception in 1956 the Development Bank has helped finance social projects and responded to emergency situations.
