OneMinutesJr workshop in Karakol - Day 4by Chris Schuepp
KARAKOL, Kyrgyzstan, 6 March 2014 - On day 4 of the OneMinutesJr workshop in Karakol we have to hurry to finish filming and start editing the remaining movies to be ready for the final presentation tomorrow.
Once again we drive out to one of the villages where the participants of the workshop live. We stop twice on the way to Baltabai - to buy paint and to film another movie with Aidai's mother before she has to go to work.
Aidai's film is a simple film about breakfast - only without the breakfast. The 15-year-old girl told us that she and many of her classmates don't want to have a proper breakfast at home because they don't want to run the risk of having to go to the school toilet.
Upon arrival in Baltabai we start giving a "good example". This will be the title of Dilshat's film. The 14-year-old girl's plan is to paint the school toilet as a first step of improving the infrastructure in her village.
And because we still need music for this film and a couple of others, we ask around for the local musician and have a short open air concert with Islam (16) who is playing the komuz, the local Kyrgyz instrument, for us for a while.
And as if we had saved "the best" for last - it is time now for Nurisa's film about garbage and nature. We drive out of Karakol towards the coast of Lake Issyk Kul and there, right next to the main road, is a huge dump site where some locals are picking the garbage for plastic and metal that they can sell. Other than that, we can only see garbage here up to the horizon where the snow-capped mountains top off the scenery.
Now we are back at the workshop venue and are busy editing the videos, finding titles and doing voice-overs. Tomorrow at 13.00 we will show the films and have visitors from the local and regional administration. Knowing the topics of the films and having been busy with the participants on the production of their films the whole week, there might be an interesting discussion coming up after the presentation. We will find out tomorrow...
