OneMinutesJr workshop in Cetinje - Day 1

By Chris Schuepp

Cetinje, MONTENEGRO, 15 June 2013 - Twenty young people from different cities in Montenegro have gathered in Cetinje to participate in a OneMinutesJr video workshop from 15-19 June.

The youngsters will produced a series of OneMinutesJr videos on the topic "Every child has the right to a family". According to the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child every child has right to live in a loving and safe family environment. Every country that signed this convention - Montenegro is one of them - is obliged to make sure that this becomes a reality for every child.

In fact, 75 percent of the participants do live with both their parents. However, this also means that five of the twenty participants grow up with only one parent or live in a child care institution.

On the first day of the 5-day workshop we go through the regular round of introductions and then focus on different camera positions, camera movements and camera angles. The teenagers are very interested in the technical aspects of the film-making training, but they are also very tuned in when it comes to the topic of the workshop.

We want to know from them why it is so important to live with both parents. Soon they start telling us stories they heard from friends, neighbors or sometimes even their own stories and it becomes obvious that most families have their issues and that the children suffer from a negative atmosphere at home.

We go into more detail in the second part of the day when we talk individually with the participants in the "brainstorming and script development session". While the teenagers take turns in talking to the trainers from Iceland and Germany, the others take the first step with the cameras after another short technical introduction.

The first story ideas include an empty stage in a theatre, a chess board, the King and Queen of Hearts, a family album, Santa Claus, a birthday cake, a dark tunnel, three cups and a ball and many other things that only children can come up with. This is going to be a very interesting workshop...
