OneMinutesJr workshop in Ust-Kamenogorsk - Day 5by Chris Schuepp UST-KAMENOGORSK, Kazakhstan, 7 September 2012 - The last day of the video workshop in East Kazakhstan has arrived and we are working with the 16 teenagers on the finalization of their OneMinutesJr films. It always seems like things are done when you have filmed the material and edited it, but then you have to do all the "little things" like titles, subtitles, video and audio transitions and so on. Multiply this by 16 and you know how long the to-do list is - deadline 2 PM today...
But then, all of a sudden it is early afternoon in School No 45 in Ust-Kamenogorsk and everybody in the big auditorium is ready for the presentation. The director of the school has come, representatives of the local authorities, journalists, UNICEF specialist on DRR (disaster risk reduction) and of course also the participants and a full class of younger students who acted in one of the movies together with their teacher. We start the presentation with a short explanation for all participants about Disaster Risk Reduction and what UNICEF is doing in Kazakhstan and the region to prepare children for possible natural disasters. But then it is time for the films and every single one is cheered by the audience. In the end, everybody is happy and also surprised that it is possible to do all this in just one week. The children have covered many different aspects of disasters in their films and have been very outspoken, very critical but also very forward-looking.
The director of the school finally promises to have the films shown in front of all students and the local TV station invites the trainers and organizers for the late afternoon to the studio for an interview. The videos will soon be online and we will also make sure that decision-makers in Kazakhstan and the CEECIS region will see them so they can take the necessary action and live up to the children's demands.
