Regional Director
Ms. Maria R. Calivis became Regional Director for UNICEF CEE/CIS in February 2004. Before joining our region, she served as the UNICEF Country Office Representative in India from 2000 to January 2004. Ms. Calivis began her career in UNICEF in 1983 as Assistant Project Officer, Education in Beirut, managing UNICEF work to rehabilitate schools in South Lebanon. In 1985 she was on special assignment to the West Bank and Gaza setting up UNICEF operations. From 1986 to 1989, she was Deputy Representative in Guinea Conakry. Prior to joining UNICEF, Ms. Calivis was Assistant Director of the Research Unit at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), Bologna Center, Italy. Ms. Calivis is an Italian national. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Middle Eastern Political Economy from the American University in Cairo, Egypt; a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from the John Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Washington DC, and a Masters of Science in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics.
