Deputy Regional Director
Ms. Kirsi Madi has over 20 years of experience in the fields of development and humanitarian action from operational, policy and coordination perspectives. She assumed her position as Deputy Regional Director as of 1 March, 2010.
She joined UNICEF in 1991 and has since held a number of different positions of increasing responsibility. She has worked in a number of countries supporting immediate emergency response or contingency planning and preparedness processes.
From 2002 to 2005 she served as the Chief of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Secretariat in the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva.
From 2005 to 2007 Ms. Madi served as the Deputy Director of the Office of the Secretary of the UNICEF Executive Board. In 2007 she was appointed as the Secretary of the Executive Board of UNICEF based at UNICEF Headquarters in New York.
Ms Madi has a M.A. in Political Science with specialization in International Relations and Social Anthropology. Before joining the foreign service of her native country, Finland, and subsequently the United Nations, she conducted research in India on the question of political mobilization of the urban poor.
