from 16 countries in Asia-Pacific. |
The Asia-Pacific Television Forum on Children and Youth (4-7 February
2001) brought together over 120 high-level television professionals
to discuss the media's critical role in promoting and protecting
the rights of children.
Representatives of public and private broadcasters, satellite and
cable networks, and regional television associations presented and
discussed innovative programming ideas and advocacy campaigns. The
emphasis was on producing high-quality television programmes for
children, ensuring that children's concerns are given the attention
they deserve, and making sure that children's "voices"
are heard on television.
Apart from the Forum's official
declaration, an action blueprint
for TV news and children's entertainment and educational programmes
was developed so that broadcasters can immediately look to the future.
Forum participants also pledged to support the upcoming United Nations
General Assembly Special Session on Children with widespread coverage
of its aims and goals.
As the world grasps the compelling needs of children, Nelson Mandela
and Graca Machel, two international champions of human rights, are
reaching out to leaders from all sectors of society, including broadcasters,
to join a Global Movement for Children.
Its aim is to change the world for and with children. The Forum
participants confirmed their commitment to do whatever needs to
be done, especially through the development of new programming ideas
and regional partnerships, to expand television's support for children.
The Forum was the first follow-up meeting in the region to the
Asian Summit on Child Rights and the Media held in Manila in 1996,
and its Declaration was to be presented to the 3rd World Summit
on Media for Children in Greece in March, 2001.
