Alternative Education helps the population excluded from the formal education system

People who have abandoned formal education or have never participated in it are at risk of remaining excluded from the formal education system. This problem is particularly acute for working children and adolescents, young mothers and women in rural areas. The Alternative Education Project helps all those who find themselves in this situation.

National, departmental and municipal actions depend on the availability of resources. In coordination with allies such as the Government of the Netherlands Cooperation for Development Agency and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), the project works directly with the Viceministry for Alternative Education to strengthen its normative role and technical capacity to develop adequate strategies, as well as to administer and monitor alternative education programmes.

UNICEF provides support for the adaptation of study programmes and development of all necessary teaching materials, including bilingual methodology. Taking into account the low level of funding available, municipal and community participation is essential for the implementation of literacy programmes as well as other alternative education programmes.

Within prioritized areas, UNICEF supports initiatives that respond to local requirements and facilitate the learning of lessons, bringing successful experiences to the attention of those in charge of defining policies. Also, attention is given to developing activities outside school. New "spaces" and positive forums for expression are offered and social interaction is promoted between children in the formal and alternative education systems.
