Impact
With UNICEF support, the BIH Government and the Council for Children have prepared and submitted the Initial Report on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in BIH and the State Plan of Action for Children 2002-2010. BIH Council for Children is now promoting the recommendations of the CRC Committee amongst BIH governments and parliaments as well as to the general public. Two hundred government officials were trained on the CRC monitoring and implementation. Some 50,000 children have increased their knowledge, communications and participation skills through the workshops about child rights, implemented with UNICEF’s support since 1998.
The experience of four national NGOs that have implemented the workshops was summarized into 4 manuals - on child rights workshops, child rights education, child participation and peer education. More than 1000 teachers have been taught about child rights and child-centred approaches since 1998. Teachers did not only implement the child-centred practice in their classrooms, but also shared their knowledge with their peers and colleagues. A number of teachers have created child rights parliaments and child rights related extracurricular activities in their schools. In cooperation with the Ombudsmen Institutions in BIH Federation and in the Republika Srpska, the legal guide for children and parents titled “Road signs” was developed providing key information on how particular children rights can be ensured .15,000 copies of "Road signs" were printed and distributed to schools. The informal network of some 40 NGOs continues to meet regularly, to share experience and resources through a joint promotion of children’s rights in their communities.
