A human rights issue

Landmines and unexploded ordnance violate the most basic human rights to survival, protection and development, as they constitute a threat to human life, development and livelihoods, particularly in rural areas, and hinder peace, return and reconstruction. The population continues to be at risk of fatal and serious injuries. Sustainable livelihoods, return and access to housing areas and farmland are denied. Groups at particular risk include farmers, children, forestry workers, construction workers and displaced persons returning to areas they left during the war.

A long term problem

Although demining is ongoing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it will be many years before the country is free from landmine and unexploded ordnance contamination.

For decades to come, people, children and their communities, local authorities and government will have to manage the risk posed by landmines and re-integrate landmines survivors into the society.
