Children Must Have First Call on Our Attention - UNICEF reminds

The Regional Director of UNICEF’s Office for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent states (CEE/CIS), Maria Calivis paid a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) from 27-30 March. During her visit, Ms Calivis emphasized that the political situation in BIH should not divert attention from delivering on children’s rights. “In fact, children’s rights must be the centre of any reform efforts by the Government - says Ms Calivis – and adds - . “UNICEF in Bosnia and Herzegovina has a challenging role to make sure children’s views are represented at the policy-making table”.

During her short visit, Ms. Calivis wanted to fully understand the issues facing children in BIH, therefore she held a series of meetings with partners, donors and beneficiaries and government officials working closely with UNICEF.

“We in UNICEF are very concerned about the situation of children in BiH. When it comes to children and their rights, there can be no issues of religion, ethnicity or gender,” said Calivis “At my meetings in BiH, I reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment of assistance and support to the Government to make sure that children get the best possible chance to grow and develop in peace and harmony.”

UNICEF Representative in BiH, Helena Eversole, was the host of the visit. She has presented the progress report on the situation of children and youth and the challenges facing them. “This high-level visit confirms UNICEF’s commitment to the children in this country.” - said Eversole. “We all - including Government, international community, politicians, parents, teachers, and ordinary citizens - still have a lot of work to do to fulfill this country’s responsibilities under the Convention of the Right of a Child.“
