EU Delegation to BiH and UNICEF visit to joint project activities in Tesanj Municipality

Representative of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Head of Operations Section for Social Development, Civil Society and Cross-Border Cooperation, Ms Natalia Dianiskova, and Deputy Representative of UNICEF in BiH, Anne-Claire Dufay, visited the Municipality of Tesanj on 22. May 2012. They met with Mayor of Tesanj, Mr Fuad Sisic, participated in a Municipal Management Board session on Social protection and inclusion, and observed a session on budgeting.

They also interacted with children, school staff and NGO partners during a workshop on nonviolent conflict prevention and visited a school where students were making short videos.
"The European Union has funded the 'Project for Enhancing the Social Protection and Inclusion System for Children in BiH (SPIS)' with four millions euros.  Tesanj is an example of good practice so it is my pleasure to be here today, "said Natalia Dianiskova.

Deputy Representative of UNICEF, Anne-Claire Dufay mentioned that this comprehensive and cross-sector project on social protection and inclusion has been implemented in 21 Municipalities in BiH. She also highlighted important sustainability aspects. "In all Municipalities which implement the SPIS project, Municipal Management Boards were formed, comprising of representatives of institutions from all sectors. In many Municipalities, these Steering Committees have already been transformed into permanent Municipal Commissions, which will continue to promote social protection and inclusion beyond the project period, "said Anne-Claire Dufay.

The Mayor of Tesanj, Fuad Sisic, thanked for the visit and expressed his satisfaction that Tesanj is one of the Municipalities where the third phase of the project is being implemented.
"Our Municipality gained a lot through this project, we have developed an action plan that defines the most vulnerable groups of children in need of help, which is the basis for our work at municipal level. We have paid a lot of attention to this so far. Through the program, all actors working with children are connected through one body that will, I believe, get the support as the future Municipal Commission, "said Mayor Sisic.

The 'Project for Enhancing the Social Protection and Inclusion System for Children in BiH (SPIS)' is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNICEF and Government authorities at all levels. Programme is financed by the European Union  since 2008 from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) in the total amount of 4.1 million EUR, with the objective to support enhancing the system for adequate social protection policy and inclusion of children and their families. The SPIS approach, which has been successfully modeled in 21 Municipalities, has the potential to be expanded to the rest of the country.
