Training on reading and writing for critical thinkingAlmost three hundred teachers working with teenagers are being prepared to educate children to think critically and make informed decisions, in the program called “Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking”, supported by UNICEF. The aim is to teach young people to be responsible for their own learning, to form independent opinions and to respect opinions that are different from their own. The training is organized by the NGO Center for Educational Initiatives Step by Step and accredited by the International Reading Association. The Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking Project (RWCT) is based on the idea that democratic practices in schools play an important role in the transition toward more open societies. Active in 20 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, RWCT introduces research-based, instructional methods to teachers and teacher educators. These methods are designed to help students think reflectively, take ownership for their personal learning, understand the logic of arguments, listen attentively, debate confidently and become independent, life-long learners. The program can be used in all grades and subjects with existing curricula.UNICEF supports the four-weekends training programme, organized in nine project sites covering schools from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
