Action
Policy Work Within the National Education Reform in BIH, UNICEF chairs three task forces: Task Force on Preschool Education, Task Force on Inclusive Schooling and Task force on Quality of Teaching. As a result of this work the following policy documents have been developed: “Strategy for Preschool Education in BIH”, “Framework Law for Preschool Education”, and the “Action Plan for Inclusion of Children with Special Needs into the regular classrooms”, “Strategy and Operational Guidelines for Professional development of teachers”. Preparatory actions for development of standards for early childhood education and the child-friendly school standards are currently underway. Life Skills-Based Education UNICEF promotes an interactive process of teaching and learning that enables learners to acquire knowledge and develop attitudes and skills that support the adoption of healthy behaviours. Life skills build self-confidence and capacities in young people so they can make better and informed decisions about their own behaviour and life. These skills include critical thinking and decision making, communication with peers and adults. Life skills education includes content such as prevention of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and key information on reproductive health, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. Life skills-based education uses teaching and learning approaches that are child-centred, participatory and interactive, using role-plays, games, puzzles, group discussions, and a variety of other innovative teaching methods to keep students completely involved in the sessions. The life skills education has been introduced by UNICEF and its partner CIVITAS in all secondary schools in BH. The next step in development of this programme is strengthening the life skills education network in secondary schools, introducing life skills in elementary schools and developing life skills education standards and informal educational content to support educational authorities.
Democratic schools The envisaged impact of this project is to create human and material resources that will assure sustainability of the reformed educational system, including local authorities, teachers, pedagogical institutes, teachers and parents. Democratic schools address discrimination based on religious/cultural and social grounds by teaching children tolerance and respect for diversity, teaching about children’s and human rights, and giving them skills for critical thinking and better decision-making. These principles enable schools to reach out into communities to include children that are excluded because they are poor, or of ethnic minority. Also, UNICEF and its partners influence decision-makers on education policies and budget allocation with this model of inclusive child-centered schooling. UNICEF supports improvement of schools to provide physical environments better suited to the needs of ALL children, including children with special needs and learning and physical disabilities, creating schools safe for children and building partnerships with children, parents and communities of mixed ethnicities, religious and cultural backgrounds through increasing the involvement between the school and community Training on reading and writing for critical thinking
