Give young men and women not going to school a better chance of insertion

UNICEF supports Non Formal Education in order to accompany Burkina Faso Government in its policy in this specific field designed to enhance the schooling of Young people, whether going to school or not and illiterate women. Therefore, UNICEF set itself the following targets:

- contribute to increasing the rate of literacy by 40% in 2010 and by 60% in 2015 as laid down by the Ten-Year Plan on Basic Education Development ( from its French acronym PDDEB). UNICEF’s support to this later is based on its major strategies.

So far as access to education is concerned UNICEF’s support aims at setting up Non Formal Basic Education Centers, mainly in rural areas. These CEBNF host young people, whether they go to school or not and so many women, including those returning from Cote d’Ivoire following the civil conflict that broke out there since 2002. Hauts Bassins Region in Western Burkina host about a thousand women returnees. To date, 3200 young men and women attend around 67 CEBNF that are established in 17 provinces. More than 700 learners have completed their training.

UNICEF also supports the development of the cycle literacy/basic education in favor of Students’ parents association, Mothers Educators Associations and those of Management Committees from schools and education centers.

«Faire Faire» is the suggested strategy in the field of non formal education. This later determines the sphere of activity and responsibility for every actor – the state, technical and financial partners, the Civil Society, various associations and NGO. UNICEF’s operational support is given through the state, its various break-ups and various stakeholders.  Thanks to the support of UNICEF, an average of 200 members of Students’ parents associations and those from Mother Educators Associations and the management Committees are trained every year in literacy.
