Similar to many countries in the region, adolescents in Belize are growing up in an increasingly challening environment. Many young people are exposed to violence at an early age. These include experiences of interpersonal conflict in schools and in the wider community. Many of them report having experienced violence in one form or another, particularly so in urban areas, although it is also present in rural areas. For example, boys are at risk of gunshot wounds, accidental injuries and fractures, while girls are more at risk of sexual assault, rape and abuse. Violence is becoming common in all walks of life with high reports of incidences of teens who display aggressive behavior and so threats or attacks on their school teachers are now increasingly being reported.
