About half the population of adolescents aged 13-16 years in Belize are attending secondary schools, which is not compulsory. Most of them attend some sort of government-funded secondary schools, with a few attending private, fee-paying schools. In five of the six districts, more girls than boys attend secondary schools except for Toledo District. Research and examination results show that teenage girls tend to academically out-perform boys at the secondary level. There is consensus that grade repetition, low transition to secondary schools, and dropping out are serious issues for youth from low socio-economic backgrounds, dysfunctional families, and single parent households.
