The Social Services Department in the Turks and Caicos Islands, in collaboration with the UNICEF Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and the NCH Action for Children recently concluded a very successful workshop on how to prepare quality Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) State Reports.

The meeting which was held on 07 June at the Social Services Department in Provinciales saw participants from different sectors which interface either directly or indirectly with children such as representatives from health, education, immigration, nutrition, youth organizations among others, and was aimed at sensitizing them to the CRC, as well as providing them with knowledge on the type of data that needed to be gathered to prepared a quality CRC Report.

One of the facilitators of the workshop – UNICEF Child Protection Officer -Heather Stewart- took the opportunity to remind the participants that CRC Reporting should not just be seen as an outcome but as a process to assess what they have accomplished for children and what further needs to be done to ensure that their rights of all chidlren are full filled.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Social Development, the Honourable Lillian Boyce. The first draft of the CRC Report from the British Overseas Territories is due in October 2006 as it will be included as part of the CRC Report that will be submitted by the United Kingdom next year.
