IntroductionIn the Eastern Caribbean, UNICEF focuses on Capacity Building, Advocacy and Social Policy development as strategies to ensure the fulfilment of children's rights. Advocacy is the effort to gain political and social acceptance and commitment for a programme and/or a policy, through the dissemination of research or evidence and/or various forms of persuasive communication. Social Policy Development involves mainly providing technical assistance to governments and regional/sub-regional organizations with the development of policies, to ensure that they are child friendly, gender sensitive and in line with international norms and standards. Capacity Building often takes the form of workshops, seminars and other forums, which allow participants to share best practices and lessons learnt, as well as gain new skills and knowledge to better care for and advocate on behalf of children’s rights. Presently, under its Programme entitled Social Policy Monitoring and Evaluation for Children’s Rights, UNICEF supports activities in the eastern Caribbean in the areas of: Early childhood development Child protection HIV/AIDS and lifeskills and Social Policy development
