Child and Mother Nutrition Survey (CMNS) in 2005, conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics of the Government's Planning Division with support from UNICEF, is designed to asses the nutritional status of children under 5 years and their mothers in Bangladesh. Adopting the new growth reference standards of the World Health Organization, the survey found that despite gradual improvement in child nutritional status, the levels of undernutrition still remain unacceptably high with 40% of under-five children underweight, 46% stunted and 15% wasted. Chronic energy deficiency of mothers is also declining but the problem of their overweight is increasing rapidly.
