Road accidents are common in Bangladesh, causing death and disability. Dhaka division. |
As soon as children are mobile, injury becomes the main threat to their survival.
Drowning
Drowning alone is the leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 4. Unaware of the risks, parents and caregivers fail to supervise their children and do not fence ponds, river banks, cooking fires and other hazards.
Other injuries result from:
- road accidents
- falls
- burns
- poisoning, and
- animal bites
Injury rates increase during emergency periods following floods or cyclones.
Disability
Injury disables 36 children every day. Although Bangladesh is a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, very limited health, education or protection services are available for disabled children. Children with disabilities are likely to fall deeper into poverty.
