Successful cooperation with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation
In 2008, UNICEF formed a partnership with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, chaired by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, to promote child protection, health, and education. UNICEF and the Foundation cooperate on a number of projects, but one of the most significant developments came in autumn 2008 when the government launched a nationwide public awareness campaign – “Every Child Needs a Family” -- to promote a child’s right to grow up in a family environment.
Concern and commitment to the importance of child care reforms, as well as the strong charisma of the First Lady, was the spark that ignited the child protection reform and the deinstitutionalization process in 2005. The First Lady’s maxim that “no matter how good the institution, the best place for a child is at home” has underpinned many efforts.
UNICEF and the Foundation plan to further develop relations and form a broader coalition of government agencies and the private sector to tackle a number of pressing issues concerning children.
