The National Conference on actual problems and perspectives of breastfeeding in Azerbaijan to foster public discussion and awareness to improve mother and child health

BAKU, 25 November, 2010 – Heydar Aliyev Foundation and UNICEF, in collaboration with the Government of Azerbaijan, have joined together to foster discussions on importance of exclusive breastfeeding in improving the nutritional health and well-being of infants and young children in Azerbaijan.  “There is growing evidence that early initiation of exclusive breastfeeding has a significant impact on reducing overall neonatal mortality. Breastfed children have at least a six times greater chance of survival in the early months than non-breastfed children.” – said Mr. Mark Hereward, UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan. “I am very pleased that the conference will create an opportunity to discuss and review of the social and public health perspectives of breastfeeding and will contribute to implementation of the law on infant young child feeding in Azerbaijan”

As a part of continuing contributions to this partnership, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and UNICEF are organizing a joint event on November 25, 2010 (Baku Business Center) to review and discuss significance of breastfeeding in improving the nutritional health and well-being of mothers and young children in Azerbaijan in Azerbaijan.

A number of key governmental officials, including Prof. Nasib Guliyev, Director Research Institute of Pediatrics, Chief Pediatrician, Musa Guliyev, Social Commission of Parliament, Ibrahim Ahmadov, Head of Nutrition department of Medical University and representatives of international organizations, including UN agencies and experts on mother and child health will take part at the event.
