تم تقديم دراسة الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة المتعلقة بالعنف ضد الأطفال إلى الجمعية العامة، ,وتطرقت هذه الدراسة لهذه المشكلة بالتمحيص في خمسة سياقات ـ في المنزل والأسرة ، في المدارس والبيئات التعليمية ، في مراكز الرعاية والمؤسسات الإصلاحية ، في مكان العمل ، وفي المجتمع.

وبالرغم من وجود نقص دائم في البيانات، يخلص التقرير إلى أن العنف يحدث في كل مكان ، وعادة يكون عن طريق شخص معروف للطفل ، ففي جميع الحالات بلا استثناء يتم إخفاؤه عن الأنظار أو تركه دون عقاب.
