Through the ongoing Schools for Africa initiative (SFA), UNICEF is implementing an integrated education programme aimed at improving quality of education and overall enrolment, with special emphasis on girls.

The project supports the construction/rehabilitation of 1,500 schools in 59 prioritized municipalities. As part of the integrated package, water and adequate sanitation will be ensured in all the targeted schools.

Apart from enhancing enrolment and attendance, water and sanitation at a school also increases the important role the school plays in the surrounding community. With adequate facilities, schools become central water and sanitation resource centres whose services can be used by all members of the community.

Under this initiative, schoolchildren learn life skills messages related to high health risk behaviours, mine risk education and HIV/AIDS prevention to wider audiences.

The project seeks an active role from communities in the development and management of the school. In addition to mobilizing support for the construction/rehabilitation of school buildings and the provision/installation of new water and sanitation facilities, communities are also encouraged to take full responsibility for their operation and maintenance to ensure sustainable access to and use of these facilities.

The following activities are or will be implemented:

• Ensure water and sanitation facilities in all 1,500 schools, complementing ongoing Schools for Africa Project Initiative across 59 municipalities;
• Develop, produce and distribute life-skills based hygiene and environmental education teaching and learning materials to 1,500 schools; and through training/orientation of 4,000 teachers, facilitate their use;
• Support pilot school-based environmental projects in 100 selected schools,
• Promote learning alliances (LA), among relevant stakeholders to facilitate knowledge networking for scaling up of best practices on the SSHE initiative.
