Esso Renews its Support to UNICEF in the National Cholera Outbreak

LUANDA, 22 January 2007 –  UNICEF and Esso Exploration Angola (Block 15) Limited announced today a grant to UNICEF from ExxonMobil Foundation's Africa Health Initiative of US$ 100,000 to help contain Angola’s current cholera outbreak that has already claimed over 2,776 lives.
The cholera crisis began in February 2006 in Angola’s capital Luanda. As of December 2006, over 67,255 cumulative cholera cases had been reported with 2,722 fatalities in 16 out of the country’s 18 provinces, according to government statistics and health centre registrations. To prevent another nationwide outbreak, rapid and sustained interventions in the most-affected areas as well as measures throughout the country are being pursued by the Ministry of Health and its partners.

“This contribution comes at a critical moment as heavy rains throughout the country are increasing the number of cases originated by this waterborne disease,” said Angela Kearney, UNICEF Angola Representative, adding that approximately 35 per cent of all cholera victims are children under the age of five. "This grant is a key resource to fund the safe water and sanitation component of the Emergency Support for Cholera Response being implemented by UNICEF,” Ms. Kearney said.
The ExxonMobil grant follows the Foundation’s contribution of US$ 111,000 to UNICEF when the epidemic broke out last year.
UNICEF will continue to work with the National Cholera Task Force, comprised by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Energy and Water, Ministry of Education, WHO and NGO partners, to reduce the incidence of cholera. This will be ensured through the provision of adequate supply of safe water, technical assistance for cholera case management and dissemination of key messages through the mass media to reach the population at household levels.

“We are very pleased to be collaborating with UNICEF to help the Ministry of Health and the National Cholera Task Force to manage the deadly effects of the current cholera outbreak. This grant complements Esso's ongoing support for national public health and education projects,” said Terry McPhail, Esso’s Managing Director.

UNICEF's cholera management activities will focus on the most-affected provinces of Benguela, Cunene, Huambo, Huila and Uige, but support will be provided to all other provinces of the country to prevent and contain the further spread of the disease.
