Safe motherhood
Support to health units is focusing on increasing antenatal care for pregnant women in an effort to ensure they receive the recommended doses of TT-immunization, iron and folic acid supplementation, two doses of SP (Sulphadoxine pyrimethamine) as Intermittent Prophylactic Treatment (IPT) against malaria, de-worming, one insecticide treated bed-net and advice on HIV/AIDS and the risks related to pregnancy and labour. Capacity is being built to gradually introduce the partogramme as a screening tool for women suffering from complicated labour and quickly refer them to hospital. Municipalities are to be supported to develop a plan for the referral and management of women with complicated labour; an emergency obstetric care system will be established to ensure functioning communication and transport systems between first level health units and the municipal hospital, and the availability of critical drugs, blood transfusion facilities and a kit for caesarean sections. Also, health promotion efforts at the community level are focusing on antenatal care, clean delivery, family planning and awareness-raising on danger signs related to pregnancy and labour. In remote areas, traditional birth attendants are being provided with clean delivery kits and will be trained to refer mothers during complicated labour. The following activities are or will be implemented: • Provision of folic acid and iron for health units in 59 municipalities
